When Mrs. Cookie Crumbles
Mrs. Cookie was a sweet lady I met in NE Houston who is living in a blighted subdivision after Hurricane Harvey.
Her sons were trying to help her gut and clean her house, and they were all living and sleeping on concrete floors with no bedding, electricity or running water until we showed up with the "Harvey Who" - a group of soccer moms from the Woodlands area who had taken it on themselves to load up SUVs and trucks and to hand deliver necessary supplies (like blow up mattresses, sheets, pillows, toiletries, water and food items) to hard hit areas that were forgotten.
We (citizen volunteers) were there on September 14th, and were told FEMA did not arrive until a few days afterwards. There was also very limited Red Cross in the area and elderly like Mrs Cookie whose vehicles were all completely submerged during the storm did not have the capability to walk or drive to outposts.
They needed HELP to come TO THEM.
Relief must be done differently. Catastrophic events are going to continue to happen. People need our help immediately and also for long term recovery. The future of our nation depends on it. I want to be part of the solution.
